The Oxford English Dictionary is the world’s leading resource on the English language – it covers not only the meanings but also the origins and historical development of over 500,000 words and phrases! It contains a history of words based on over 3 million quotations, which can be browsed alphabetically, by topic or by source, as well as a historical thesaurus that shows how words have changed over the centuries. Another interesting feature is the expanded content on the varieties of English around the world (World Englishes) and so-called ‘antedatings’, i.e. the discovery of earlier examples of the use of words such as ‘glamour’, ‘bloke’ or ‘tooth fairy’.
